Dividend Investing Guide

New to dividend investing? Learn how dividends work in Nigeria and strategies for building income portfolios.

1

Understanding Dividend Payments

Dividends represent a portion of company profits distributed to shareholders. In Nigeria, the board proposes a dividend amount per share, which shareholders approve at the AGM. Key dates include the record date (eligibility cutoff) and payment date (when cash is transferred). Only shareholders on the register as of the record date receive the dividend.

2

Record Date vs Payment Date

The record date determines dividend eligibility. Buy shares before this date to qualify. The payment date is when funds reach your account. Nigeria uses T+3 settlement, so purchase at least 3 business days before the record date. The share price typically drops by the dividend amount on the ex-dividend date.

3

E-Dividend Registration

The Electronic Dividend Mandate links your CSCS account to your bank for automatic dividend deposits. Complete the form through your stockbroker or registrar. Dividends arrive within 24-48 hours instead of weeks. As of 2025, SEC mandates electronic payments for all listed companies.
